Description

In the history of the Syrian Catholic Community in Kerala, the places, Ettumanoor, Athirampuzha and Kuravilangad are mutually interrelated in many aspects. The branches of the ancient families such as Pakalomattam, Sankurickal, Kalli and Kalikav residing at Kuravilangad at first migrated to Athirampuzha and then to Ettumanoor. The above mentioned four families from Palayoor near Kodungallur travelled to the South and settled at Kuravilangad. According to some historians, Syrian Catholics might have migrated to Ettumanoor after 1545, the year in which Ettumanoor temple was constructed. It is believed that a Christian family from Chemplav was invited and brought to Ettumanoor by the Ettumanoor temple authorities to apply oil to purge the natives and this family later came to be known as Chemplavil family. Such a belief can be trustworthy since untouchability is said to have existed during the period in the dealings between the people of the upper caste and the lower caste.
